Improv Theater Unit Task 1: “Silent Walk” and Shape Collection
During the Walk
Use the map to plan a path to walk. We will stagger your start times so that you have a little physical space from others.
Set an alarm on your phone for 15 minutes, and listen to Song A on repeat as you walk. Observe everything around you and notice how the song influences your mood, what you see, and how you interpret what you see.
Find three distinct shapes on your walk. These can be any shapes that you notice and can be anywhere. For example, here are three different photos with different shapes. Mark on your map where you found each image by noting 1A, 2A, 3A.
For each shape/image, take 5 photos, each one from a different perspective.
When your alarm goes off after 15 minutes, switch to listening to Song B on repeat and turn around and take the same path back. Observe everything around you and notice how the song influences your mood, what you see, and how you interpret what you see.
Find three new shapes on your walk, and take 5 photos of each one, from five different perspectives. Same process as before, just go in reverse and listen to a new song. Mark the locations on your map as 1B, 2B, 3B.
For homework
- Choose your two favorite photos, one from Part A and one from Part B: they should represent the word and the feel of the music you chose and they should show clear shapes that could be transformed into movements on stage (abstract is ok)
- Post on your blog the following by Monday 9:30pm: the two photos and the words, the name of the songs and artist, and links to the song. Also, give each photo/shape a title that represents what you see.
- Print out the two photos, each one on its own piece of paper, as large as you can. Don’t write anything on the front, but put your name and the title on the back. Bring those to class on Tuesday to use for our collaborative theater-making activity.
