Reflection Of Creativity Project (Dress)

Write about your process from the original walk around CA campus to your final creation.

-Explain where you got the most information

-where you got stuck or frustrated

-how did your partner artist help you

-if your final creation was what you set out to do originally

-Include your thoughts about your critique

-if you made the second iteration of your creation, what would you change?

(minimum 100 words)

Include photos of your final creation, your moodboard, your research sketches, your concept illustration, and the process of building your creation (include tid bits about the process)

[All photos are at the end of my reflection]

My creating stemmed from our forest walk around campus. I wanted to create something that had a twist on the way I view nature. My mood board was based on art, nature, and modern politics and how they affect everyday life. Unfortunately, in the end, I decided to just make my project about nature - life, and death especially. I thought it was too much to include everything. That was a little disappointing for me because I was invested to see how the final project would turn out.

For my final project, I decided to create a high fashion dress. I wanted to include flowers as a symbol of life and brightness, happiness, and growth. I wanted the top of the dress, which was going to be a corset to represent death. I wanted it to be black and have real-looking bones as the corset bones. That way the two main parts of the dress would be the polar opposite of each other by the end, and I liked that.

Because I was making a dress, I needed a figurine or mannequin. I made my mannequin from scratch - it is made out of tinfoil on a skewer and covered in tape to give a skin-color vibe. (There are many skin colors, races, and ethnicities that can be modeled after, but because I had limited resources and limited time I was only able to create a mannequin with a light skin tone.) I decided to make a female mannequin because this body shape would fit the dress better, although my dress could be worn by any gender. I did not add facial details to my figurine so that can be left to the viewer’s imagination. Whatever you think is the beauty standard can be applied to this mannequin.

After my mannequin was complete I had to sketch out ideas for a dress. They didn’t take much time but I was debating about the length of the dress for a while. I finally decided to go with a floor-length hoop dress. The skirt part of the dress was going to be made out of light brown paper. I chose this paper because I wanted to give the dress an earthy tone and because this type of paper was workable and flexible. I taped this skirt into the corset and added plastic flowers. These do not have much detail, but if this dress was life-size these flowers would be immaculate and made out of fabric with intricate details to give the idea of real flowers on the dress. I chose different sizes, colors, and types of flowers to give the dress a natural feel.

For the corset of the dress, I chose a simple black tape material. Since it was a corset I had to make the material fit tight to the body, and I found this a little difficult. I had to make at least three tries of measuring the tape to wrap around the body. If this dress was life-size, I would probably have this corset made out of black linen with detailed bones on the outside. The corset turned out better than what I had hoped for and really embodied my vision of life vs. death.

Overall, I am extremely happy with the results of this project. This is the first fashion design I have done and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I would change if I had more time and material is the actual material. I would have preferred linen or cloth rather than tape, paper, and fake flowers, but this is the first draft so it’s fine. I would say I would like a wooden mannequin next time, but I actually like the way my handmade mannequin turned out. My figurine is beautiful to look at yet simple and compelling at the same time. I am excited to see my creative skills develop in this class.
